In 1937, it was only possible, to explore Alaska’s spectacular island world with waterplanes. Alaska Coastal Airlines as well as Ellis Airlines offered such services, both using the ingenious Consolidated Catalina for that purpose. In 1962, the two airlines merged, until four years later ACEA was in turn incorporated into Alaska Airlines. The original of this model is a PBY-5A, registered N5584V.
