In 1960, Swissair ordered nine examples of the latest product CV-990 from the US manufacturer Convair. The 990’s series-production readiness however was delayed, so Swissair had to lease two examples of the predecessor model CV-880M for some months. They were shorter, smaller and therefore faster than both the DC-8 and Boeing 707, but their immoderate kerosene consumption made their operation completely unprofitable, European fuel prices being what they are. So nothing became of this short intermezzo, until in 1962 the first CV-990s were delivered. The model with the registration HB-ICL will now be released at Herpa Wings in the 1/400 scale.
