The original of this model novelty, a CV-880M, registered VR-HFS was originally ordered by Capital Airlines, but in the end not taken on. In October 1961, Cathay Pacific purchased it for a rather low HK$ 25,207,908 and commissioned it as VR-HFS on April 8, 1962, as the first of eventually nine Convairs on the route Hong Kong – Manila – Tokyo.
