Luftwaffe Panavia Tornado IDS

Air Defender 23 was the largest deployment exercise of air forces in the history of NATO. Up to 10,000 soldiers from 25 nations trained the joint response capability in a crisis situation. Germany took the leading role and was the logistical hub. No less than 250 transport, surveillance and combat aircraft took part, deployed to various locations in Germany. The U.S. National Guard alone deployed 100 aircraft to Europe for the maneuver. In addition to an Airbus A400M of Germany’s 62nd Air Transport Wing, a Tornado fighter-bomber of the 51st Tactical Air Force Wing was specially decorated on occasion of this major NATO exercise.
