In the wake of the destruction caused by World War II, the fledgling German state was initially prohibited from engaging in any form of military aviation. Ten years after the end of the war, however, this changed when the Western Allies sought to integrate (West) Germany into the newly formed NATO to counter the growing threat posed by the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact. Thus, the Luftwaffe was officially established on January 9, 1956—70 years ago. In 2026, the Luftwaffe celebrates this significant anniversary with, among other things, a special design on various aircraft. On this A400M transporter from Air Transport Wing 62, the original 70th-anniversary logo was supplemented with the silhouettes of the three aircraft models used to date—the Nord Noratlas, the Transall C-160, and the Airbus A400M—and set against a space-themed background. This background is, above all, a symbol of the Air Force’s current and future scope. It is intended to show that the Air Force is no longer responsible only for aircraft and airspace, but also possesses capabilities in space and in space-based reconnaissance and communications. ,In the wake of the destruction caused by World War II, the fledgling German state was initially prohibited from engaging in any form of military aviation.
