Originally set up as the 11th Observation Squadron in early 1942, the unit mostly served in the reconnaissance role during the Cold War, also seeing action in the Vietnam War, then equipped with the RF-4 Phantom. In the 1970s, the squadron reequipped with the Ryan Firebee, one of the first jet-propelled drones, which it used for photographic reconnaissance before being placed inactive in 1979. One and a half decades later, the unit was again activated, this time as the first remotely piloted aircraft squadron in the U.S. Air Force to operate the MQ-1 Predator in the reconnaissance and surveillance roles, later also adopting the training role for future unmanned Aerial vehicle (UAV) units.
